The next big thing after big data will be deep learning – a new area of Machine learning research that aims to move the ML closer to Artificial Intelligence. It’s a very promising area considering the fact that AI and ML are still the cutting edge technologies and deep learning goes further than both. According to projections in the near future, deep learning will be a core component in the tool-kit of 80% of data scientists and analytics. When most people don’t even hear about it, deep learning is already used by Google, Netflix, Amazon and even MIT.

What is deep learning?

If AI technologies aim to make intelligent machines and programs, machine learning allows learning without being explicitly programmed than DL learning based on Deep Neural Network. Deep learning is a kind of subset of ML because of ML algorithms that are used to train Deep Neural Networks in order to achieve better accuracy in those cases where ML couldn’t cope or was not performing up to the mark.

Deep learning aims to feed a computer system a lot of data, which it can use to make decisions about other data through neural networks.

Simply put, deep learning aims to simulate the way our brain functions, so it learns from experience. The human brain is made up of billions of neurons that allow us to do what we do and to solve the tasks that are highly complex to solve even using supercomputers. Even the simplest, at first glance, processes that we do every day as discriminate voices and recognize a particular person based voice or draw inferences from facial gestures of another person beyond the capacity of most today’s technologies.

But as you already know some of the deep learning abilities already used in our life. As an example, Facebook automatically labels or tags everybody in the photo. In this case deep learning because of deep neural networks aims to automatically find out all the features that are needed for classification. MIT has gone further and is trying to predict the future using deep learning. Yes, deep learning is far away from the human brain, good news for that, who is afraid of “Rise of the Machines”, but it’s already capable in some super cool tricks as:

  1. Speech Recognition;
  2. Automatic Machine Translation;
  3. Instant Visual Translation;
  4. Self Driven Cars.
